You can replace the background image or video in any ThingLink media project without rebuilding it from scratch. This is useful when the background media needs to be updated: instead of re-uploading and re-tagging, simply replace the background file with the new version. All tags will be preserved, and the original link and embed code will continue to work.
This feature is available for images, 360° images, videos, and 360° videos.
How to replace the background image or video
- Open your media project
- Click the 'More options' (three dots) button in the upper right corner, then select 'Replace media'
- Select the replacement file from your device.
- Refresh the page.
Replacing videos - special considerations
Be careful when replacing background videos. ThingLink does not adjust tag timing when you replace the video. Ideally, the new video should be the same length or longer than the original.
If the replacement video is shorter, adjust the timing of your tags before replacing the video. Make sure no tag is set to appear at a timestamp beyond the duration of the new video.
Example: The original video is 1 minute long (01:00), and the tags are shown between 00:40–00:55. The replacement video is only 50 seconds long (00:50). To ensure the tags display correctly, change the tag timing to 00:40–00:50 before replacing the media file.
Note that the video may become unavailable for a few minutes while ThingLink processes the new video file.
General tips
- 2D images and videos: the icons should stay in the same positions. However, if the new file has a different aspect ratio/dimensions, you may need to adjust the icon placement.
- 2D images and videos: if the new media file has different dimensions and the scene is embedded somewhere, we highly recommend getting fresh embed code via the 'Share' button.
- 360° images and videos: the relative position of the tag icons will remain the same. However, you may need to update the icon placement if the new photo was taken from a different perspective than the original.
- You cannot replace a 2D image/video with a 360° image/video and vice versa. The media format remains the same.
- This feature uses standard upload specifications. If you get an error while trying to replace an image, check if the new file meets the upload specifications or not.
- The share links and embed code for the project remain the same - you do not need to update them.
