The ThingLink XR app supports most ThingLink media projects and Scenario Builder content on Meta Quest, PICO, and HTC VIVE headsets. Review the limitations in this article and test your content in a headset before sharing it with viewers.
Note: this article outlines the ThingLink XR app limitations only. If you are looking for how to use the app, click here.
Supported content
The ThingLink XR app supports the following content types:
- All ThingLink media projects: 360-degree images and tours, 360-degree videos, 2D images, 2D videos, and 3D models. Media projects can be opened using a shortcode or through your organization's landing page.
- Scenarios: all scenarios created with Scenario Builder 2.0. Scenarios can be opened using a shortcode or through your organization's landing page.
Media projects support all tag types with minor limitations. This includes embed tags, which allow you to display third-party content such as YouTube videos and embedded web pages.
Offline viewing
The XR app supports offline viewing for media projects created with ThingLink's Media editor. To download a project, publish it to your organization's landing page, open the landing page in the app, and select the Download button shown on top of compatible content.
Once a project is downloaded, the app loads the experience from the device instead of loading it over the internet. If the headset has no internet connection, the app displays downloaded content instead of the standard home page.
Scenarios cannot currently be downloaded for offline use.
Sign-in limitations
The XR app currently does not support third-party sign-in methods, such as Microsoft and Google, or single sign-on. Viewers have to sign in to their ThingLink account using an email address and password when using the 'Account' option.
Unsupported content and features
The XR app currently does not support the following features:
- Text & media tags do not support some content types and settings. This includes custom layouts and color customization. Some links added to link buttons may return an error.
- Some advanced settings and additional features are not supported. This includes the info panel and floor plan features.
- Scenario Builder: Matching, Essay, Fill in the blanks, Grouping and Pick a Point question and activity types are not currently supported. These blocks are expected to be supported by the end of August 2026.
Known limitations for supported features
- Embed tags: embeds are not optimized for VR controls. It may be difficult to interact with certain embedded content types, such as embedded 3D models or interactive content that requires dragging gestures, such as maps. We recommend testing embedded content inside the headset before sharing it with viewers.
- Content translations: translations are supported, but there is no way to load content in a pre-determined language. Instead, viewers can select the language they want to use after opening the project.
Recommended testing
Before sharing XR content with viewers, open the content in the headset and check that all important tags, embeds, videos, links, and navigation paths work as expected. This is especially important for content that includes embedded web content, interactive third-party tools, long texts, or translated versions.
