Overview
Scenario Lifecycle settings help you manage scenario availability, completion requirements, and learner progress.
You can use these settings to:
- show learners whether they have started or completed a scenario
- define what learners need to do for the scenario to count as completed (Completion criterion)
- set a date after which the scenario is no longer available to learners (Expiration date setting)
- require learners to retake a scenario after a set period (Frequency setting)
These settings are useful for mandatory training, recurring learning activities, certification workflows, and other scenarios where learners need to complete content by a specific time or meet specific completion requirements.
Availability
Scenario Lifecycle settings are available on licenses that include learner accounts and learner analytics.
Progress labels are shown to learners on the organization landing page.
Organization administrators can also review learner progress across landing page scenarios from the scenario statistics dashboard. The dashboard is currently available from the Statistics tab on the organization landing page. Learn more.
Progress labels shown to learners
Learners can see their progress status for each scenario on the organization landing page:
A scenario can show one of the following labels:
No label: The learner has not interacted with the scenario yet.
In progress: The learner has started the scenario but has not completed it yet. This can also mean that the learner reached an ending in the scenario but did not meet the completion criterion.
Completed: The learner has reached an ending in the scenario and met the completion criterion. If no completion criterion is set, the scenario is marked as completed when the learner reaches an ending.
Re-take (Completed): The learner has completed the scenario, but the completion is no longer valid because the frequency period has passed. The learner needs to complete the scenario again.
Lifecycle settings
To configure lifecycle settings that control scenario availability and completion requirements, open your scenario in editing view, click Settings (cog icon), and navigate to the Lifecycle tab. From there, you can adjust the following optional settings:
- Expiration date
- Frequency
- Completion criterion
Expiration date
The Expiration date setting controls when the scenario becomes unavailable to learners.
When enabled, learners can no longer open the scenario after the selected expiration date. You can still edit the scenario and review its data.
Use this setting when you want to:
- set a deadline for completing a scenario
- prevent learners from accessing outdated content
- make a scenario available only during a specific period
Frequency
The Frequency setting controls how often learners need to complete the scenario again.
For example, if learners need to complete a training scenario every 3 months, set the frequency to Every 3 months. After a learner completes the scenario, it will remain completed for 3 months. Once the completion period expires, the scenario will show the Re-take (Completed) label on the landing page.
Learners receive an email reminder 14 days before they need to retake the scenario.
Completion Criterion
The Completion criterion setting defines what the learner must do for the scenario to count as completed.
If no completion criterion is set, the scenario is considered completed when the learner reaches an ending.
You can choose one completion criterion.
1. Reaching a minimum score
The learner must earn the required number of points in a single attempt/viewing session.
If the learner reaches an ending without earning enough points, the scenario is not marked as completed.
2. Exploring a minimum percentage of building blocks
The learner must view a certain percentage of the blocks in the scenario. The percentage must be a whole number between 1 and 100.
This option is useful for non-linear or exploratory scenarios where learners can choose their own path, but you still want to make sure they view enough of the content.
3. Landing on specific blocks
The learner must view specific blocks in a single attempt. If the learner reaches an ending without viewing all required blocks, the scenario is not marked as completed.
This option is useful for branched scenarios where learners may take different paths, but need to visit specific key sections before the scenario counts as completed.
How completion status is tracked
A learner’s completion status is based on their interaction with the scenario while signed in.
If completion criteria are used, the learner must meet the selected criterion in a single attempt for the scenario to be marked as completed.
If the scenario has a frequency setting, the learner’s completed status remains valid only for the selected period. After that period ends, the learner needs to retake the scenario.
Notes and limitations
- If any of your learners have viewed or completed the scenarios before this feature was enabled on your account, their progress status will be set to 'In progress' even if they have completed the scenario.
- You can choose only 1 completion criterion per scenario.
- The completion criterion does not affect how the learner’s score is sent to an LMS. The score is sent when the learner reaches an ending, even if the completion criterion is not fulfilled.
