Sounds and narration can help introduce a scene, provide instructions, or highlight details inside a tag. In ThingLink, audio can be added to the whole scene, to a Text & Media tag, or through an embedded external audio player.
Use the options below depending on how you want the audio to behave.
| Audio type | Where it plays | Controls | Best for |
| Scene background audio | In the scene while the project is viewed | Playback controls; supports captions | General narration or ambience |
| Text & Media tag background audio | In the background while the Text & Media tag is open | Pause/mute; does not support captions | Narration that should continue while viewers explore the tag |
| Text & Media tag audio media item | As a media item inside a Text & Media tag | Playback controls; supports captions | Audio that needs controls or captions |
| External audio embed | Inside an Embed tag | Depends on the external service | Externally hosted audio, such as SoundCloud |
Upload background audio to a scene
Use scene background audio when you want the same audio to support the whole scene or media project, such as general narration, ambient sound, or an introduction.
To add background audio:
- Open the scene in the editor.
- Select Settings.
- Select Upload audio and choose an audio file from your device.
- Once you add background audio to your image, it will function as a video. Please refer to the article about our video editor to learn how it differs from the image editor.
The audio plays while the scene is being viewed. Opening a tag pauses the scene background audio while the tag is open.
Add audio to a Text & Media tag
Text & Media tags support two audio options: tag background audio and audio media items.
Add background audio to a Text & Media tag
Use tag background audio when the audio should continue playing while the viewer explores the tag popup.
To add tag background audio:
- Open the Text & Media tag in the editor.
- Select Upload background audio.
- Upload an audio file or record audio directly in the editor.
When the viewer opens the tag, the audio starts playing in the background. The viewer can pause or mute it, and can continue viewing other media items in the tag while the audio plays.
Add audio as a media item in a Text & Media tag
Use an audio media item when you want the viewer to interact with the audio file directly.
To add an audio media item:
- Open the Text & Media tag in the editor.
- Under Media files, click the upload button:
- Select an audio file from your device.
Audio added as a media item appears as an audio player inside the tag. It includes playback controls, and you can add captions if needed.
The audio only plays while the audio item is selected. If the viewer switches to another item in the tag, such as an image or video, the audio pauses.
Audio file requirements / Upload specifications
Uploaded audio files must be in MP3 or M4A format. The maximum file size is 25 MB.
If you record audio directly in the editor, make sure your browser has permission to use your microphone.
Embed audio from third-party services
Some services, such as SoundCloud, provide embed codes for audio players. You can add these players to ThingLink using an Embed tag.
To embed external audio:
- Copy the embed code from the external service.
- Add an Embed tag in ThingLink.
- Paste the embed code into the tag.
Playback controls and behavior depend on the external service. Audio from an embedded player usually starts only when the viewer starts it manually, and stops when the tag is closed.
