Creating an immersive escape room with ThingLink allows you to use interactive multimedia to engage viewers better, allowing them to learn and develop problem-solving skills. Whether you're crafting a digital escape room for education, team-building or corporate and employee training, effectively using different tags and functionalities can make the experience more engaging.
This guide provides tips and strategies to help you build immersive and compelling digital escape rooms in ThingLink.
Use a pre-made template for planning
Planning is important when creating a large project. We recommend making a document with detailed outlines and steps for your escape room. We have created an escape room template that you can use right away or use as a guide or inspiration for developing your own.
Open this escape room template -> 'File' -> 'Make a copy' and start editing. You can also download the document as a Word or PDF file. At the bottom of this article, you'll find an attachment of the filled-out template.
Here is an example of an escape room made using the previous base:

Step-by-step guide: How to create a digital escape room
The Planning Document
Break up the main story into an appropriate number of sub-scenes. It is important that these align with the core topics outlined in the narrative and the established learning objectives.
Transfer Plan into Media on ThingLink
12. Begin with the cover media and include essential information for players before they enter the digital escape room. This should include, but is not limited to, the main story, learning objectives, rules, and tools.
13. Gradually, work through each scene and materialize the content from the planning document. Always start with the base media and continue by incorporating tasks and additional media. If the base media is AI-generated, copy and paste the prompt.
14. Maintain strong awareness of the accessibility of your media and allow for an inclusive learning experience.
15. Once all scenes have been created, combine them based on the chosen structure by using either transit tags or the scenario builder. Despite faster assembly through transit tags, the scenario builder offers comprehensive learner analytics and multiple options to sophisticate your digital escape room. Learn more about the benefits and much more here: Scenario builder.
Test, Reflect, Refine, and Shine
16. Carefully go through the escape room from beginning to end, ensuring that your ThingLinks and media are correctly compiled. Pay particular attention to the accessibility features, media functionality (e.g., links, videos), and tasks, including conditional answers to progress from scene to scene. Ask friends, coworkers, or family to provide constructive feedback.
17. Reflect on the collected feedback and adjust if necessary.
18. Once everything is in order, you are ready to share your digital escape room and enjoy the fruits of your work!
